Exploring the Great Outdoors with Forest School
Nature-Based Learning at Hove Village Day Nurseries

At Hove Village Day Nurseries, we believe that some of the most meaningful learning happens beyond the walls of a classroom. That’s why we incorporate Forest School-inspired experiences into our curriculum — giving children the freedom to explore, play, and learn in nature.

Whether it’s the beach, park, woodland, or green spaces, our outdoor adventures are more than just fresh air — they’re rich learning opportunities that nurture confidence, curiosity, and resilience.
What is Forest School?
Forest School is a child-led, outdoor learning approach that originated in Scandinavia. It focuses on regular experiences in natural environments, helping children develop problem-solving skills, independence, and a deeper connection with the world around them.
At Hove Village, we incorporate key Forest School principles into our weekly routines, providing children with time and space to explore, investigate, and learn at their own pace.
How Children Learn Through Forest School
Hands-On Discovery
Children are encouraged to explore the natural world — collecting leaves, building dens, creating with natural materials, or investigating insects and plants. This hands-on learning sparks curiosity and develops critical thinking skills.
Building Confidence and Resilience
Nature is full of challenges — climbing over logs, balancing on beams, or solving problems together. These activities support physical development and emotional resilience.
Risk Awareness and Independence
Supervised, age-appropriate risks — like balancing, climbing, or simple tool use — teach children how to assess situations, make decisions, and grow in confidence.
Social and Emotional Growth
Working together outdoors strengthens communication, cooperation, and empathy. Children learn to listen to each other, solve problems as a group, and care for their environment.
Creativity in Nature
From creating wild art with sticks and leaves to storytelling under the trees, the natural world offers endless inspiration for imaginative play and creative expression.
